It’s no secret that Abstract Forms is a vinyl only label, I get asked a lot why I don’t release digitally. I’m not anti mp3’s, they have plenty of benefits but in the long term I see them as an addition to vinyl and not a replacement. So why not release digital versions too? Well that’s simple, I have no love affair for mp3’s, the format doesn’t excite me and they don’t sound as good. There is no substitute for the analogue warmth that vinyl offers and when mixed down by a trained engineer who applies his/her special expertise to the cut - well for me there is no other choice, it has to be vinyl.
I also wonder about the extra work involved with keeping track of your mp3 output and online sales. It’s too much admin work for such a small label, I see Abstract Forms as a love affair and a passion but not a business. I don’t make a single penny from Abstract Forms, its a hobby, thats why I release in limited vinyl quantities only.
I’ve grown up with vinyl and seeing it survive the recent digital revolution has only increased my love for it even more so Abstract Forms is my way of giving something back to the likeminded people who share my passion.
